The institutional crisis between the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the police has escalated to new heights, with the matter now before the Supreme Court.

The role of the President as the guardian of the Constitution is seen as crucial in restoring order.

Former Attorney General Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra expressed concern that the ongoing confrontation between two key constitutional institutions, the Police and the DPP, is detrimental to the country and must be resolved promptly. She suggested that the President intervene as a mediator to defuse the crisis.

Legal expert Khushal Lobine also emphasized the urgency of de-escalating the situation, pointing to the constitutional provisions that allow the Prime Minister to give directives to the police. The need for a constitutional council to find solutions was also proposed.

Milan Meetarbhan, a lawyer and constitutional expert, also speaks of “escalation”. He believes that the Prime Minister can give directives to the police.

“The Constitution provides for the independence of the police commissioner, but the PM can give directives on policy matters. In my opinion, the PM can do so in this case to put an end to this situation which could worsen” Meetarbhan said.

Attorney Rama Valayden expressed disappointment in the conflict between the police and the DPP, noting attempts to discredit the latter and suggesting the involvement of the Financial Crime Commission as part of a larger strategy. He called for a united effort to address the issue.

Senior Counsel Gavin Glover condemned the ongoing hostilities between the institutions, urging for an end to the “foolishness” and emphasizing the need to protect citizens from being caught in the crossfire.
