32 Sectors Demand Salary Adjustments: NWCC Report Delayed

It is likely that at the end of the month, the National Wage Consultative Council (NWCC) will be ready with its report regarding the correction of anomalies in the workers’ salary grid following the implementation of the minimum wage.

No less than 32 sectors covered by the National Remuneration Board (NRB) will be affected by this salary adjustment exercise.

Among the council members, impatience for a comprehensive meeting is being felt, as the last one took place in December.

Faced with this situation, the State and Other Employees Federation (SOEF), a member of the NWCC, has decided to react. “We do not want to be faced with a done deal, as our reputation is at stake,” emphasizes Radakrishna Sadien, president of the SOEF.

In a letter entitled “Addressing Relativity Distortion,” which he plans to send to the NWCC president, Beejaye Appanah, this Monday, the union leader points out that “it has been reported in the media that the National Wage Consultative

Council is working on the Relativity Distortion to be released in March following several adjustments made in the National Minimum Wage that have been in force since January 2018.”

Radakrishna Sadien also insists: “According to Section 9 of the National Wage Consultative Act of 2016, it is the responsibility of the PRB to take administrative measures necessary to implement the NMW and address salary distortion in the public sector. To my knowledge, the last time the NWCC met was to finalize a decision on the Rs 15000 proposal as the New Minimum Wage.”

Hence the SOEF’s demand for an urgent meeting. At the NWCC management level, the emphasis is on ongoing consultations with various sectors, and once this stage is completed, the report will be made public.
