Pulse Prices Set to Soar by 15%

The price of local vegetables saw a slight downward trend in March compared to February, particularly for varieties such as eggplant, chili, and pumpkin.

There has also been an improvement in the price of herbs. However, it is important to note that prices may vary depending on the location.

For example, pumpkin that was selling at Rs 75 per pound is now priced at Rs 50 to Rs 60. Eggplant can be bought for around Rs 40 per pound while chili is now at Rs 35.

The price of local chili has also dropped to Rs 300 per pound. However, according to vendors, sales are lower.

This downward trend in prices is expected to continue if weather conditions permit.

Additionally, it should be noted that commonly consumed products are imported for sale at subsidized prices, including carrots, beans, cabbage, chili, and bananas.

This will continue until the local market stabilizes. Despite the decrease in vegetable prices, accessibility to these local products remains a challenge for many consumers.

When vegetables are expensive, pulses are a popular alternative to meet dietary needs. This trend is expected to continue, with a 10 to 15% increase in pulse prices in the coming weeks, according to Jayen Veerapen, a importer of dry beans.

He highlights several factors contributing to this trend. “Firstly, pulse production is affected by climate issues, leading to reduced yields.

Similar trends are observed in Madagascar and India, putting pressure on prices. Additionally, importing from countries like Australia or Canada is expensive.”

The importer also points out constraints related to the availability of the dollar and its appreciation against the Mauritian rupee.
