Internet Struggles: 1 Fiber Optic Cable Glitch, Millions Affected

A new technical issue on undersea fiber optic cables is affecting internet connections in Mauritius.

This was announced by Mauritius Telecom in a statement issued on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The outage was detected in West Africa and the consortium of operators owning and managing the infrastructure are working to fix it.

In the meantime, Mauritius Telecom has redirected traffic to other undersea fiber optic cables.

The impact was felt across the country on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Several internet users complained of slowdowns to Défi Quotidien.

Among these users were the managers of a pharmacy whose credit card payment machine could not access the network.

The slowdown in internet connection caused several inconveniences in offices.

Additionally, internet giant Microsoft confirmed on Thursday, March 14, 2024, that its services experienced a major outage, particularly in the Middle East and Africa region.

Users of Office 365 reported being unable to connect to the service, especially Outlook for emails.
