India has approved a special provision that enables 7th-generation descendants of Indian origin from Mauritius to apply for the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card.

This notable announcement was made by Indian President Droupadi Murmu during a State Banquet to mark Mauritius’ 56th National Day celebrations.

The initiative seeks to reestablish connections for younger Mauritians of Indian descent with their ancestral land, underscoring India’s deep appreciation for shared cultural bonds.

The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card will enable Mauritian nationals of Indian origin to access various benefits. These include a lifelong multiple-entry visa to India, exemption from registration requirements, financial and educational parity with Non-Resident Indians, the ability to pursue certain professions in India, conduct business, open bank accounts, purchase property, and enjoy certain privileges in domestic air travel and national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.

President Murmu also unveiled India’s backing for Mauritius in the revamp of the Ganga Talao complex. The project aims to revitalise the site into a central hub for religious practices, cultural activities, and tourism.

Known as a sacred crater lake nestled in the heart of Mauritius, Ganga Talao holds immense religious significance as the primary Hindu pilgrimage site in the country. The renovation project is anticipated to enhance people-to-people links and cultivate stronger ties between India and Mauritius.

During her remarks, President Murmu underscored recent joint initiatives, including the introduction of UPI and RuPay Card settlement systems, the inauguration of new infrastructure projects, and plans for a jointly developed satellite along with the provision of eco-friendly electric buses.

Recognising the significant strides in bilateral relations, the president attributed the progress to the shared commitment of both governments.
