Air Mauritius Scandal: 5 Shady Appointments Rock Company Integrity

Shocking revelations and allegations suggest possible ethical standards violations and governance protocols within Air Mauritius.

According to those calling for a thorough investigation, urgent measures are needed to address these concerns.

The call for an independent company to conduct a comprehensive audit on human resources practices and recent controversial appointments is crucial to restore transparency and accountability within the airline, they suggest.

Four executives (Editor’s Note: the names have been retained) have been specifically pinpointed by well-informed whistleblowers.

In a letter addressed to Charles Cartier, the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Mauritius Ltd, Radhakrishna Sadien, negotiator for the State and Other Employees Federation (SEF), including the Air Mauritius Cabin Crew Association (AMCCA) and the newly affiliated Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (LAEA), expressed both congratulations on his recent appointment and concerns about the persistent challenges facing the national airline.

Like the AMCCA, the LAEA, tasked with advocating for the interests of MK’s licensed aircraft engineers, is facing a lack of dialogue with the administration of the national aviation company, notes Radhakrishna Sadien.

Among other issues, allegations of non-compliance with procedural agreements, delayed publication of work schedules, and bypassing the union to deal directly with members have been advanced.

In addition to the suspension of one manager and the appointment of another person to replace them without prior consultation with the union, he also deplores obstacles regarding respecting union leave and reviewing meal allowances.

The president of the SEF thus emphasises in his correspondence that, despite the new CEO’s speeches in favour of social dialogue within the company, the reality on the ground is different.

Repeated requests for meetings with the former management went unanswered, and the presence of company lawyers rather than management itself was a constant during meetings with labour mediation bodies, in addition to repeated requests for adjournments by Air Mauritius Ltd, notes the union representative.

This, he said, raises concerns about the airline’s willingness to address problems constructively and transparently.
