Electoral Calendar Likely To Get Clearer After May Day

The MSM ruling party is reportedly anticipating the possibility of a general election in 2024, with the May 1, 2024 Labour Day rallies viewed as a possible start or end to the election campaign.

According to reports, although there have been no official indications of the timing of the vote, provisions are reportedly being made by the National Secretariat for major religious festivals, including the pilgrimage to Ganga Talao.

Furthermore, drafts of regulations for categorising Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) as a National Heritage Site are expected to be promulgated by the government under the National Heritage Fund Act, with the festivities at Ganga Talao scheduled for next year.

While the anticipation of the election calendar is said too early, one option that has been speculated in political circles is the possibility of a dissolution of the National Assembly by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth when parliament resumes after the Independence and Republic national holidays on 12 March.

Regardless, the speeches on the Budget will be likely to be critical for the government given that the March parliamentary session requires the Minister of Finance to report on the previous financial year to the National Assembly, where financial mismanagement will be an issue.
