The Local Government (Amendment No. 2) Bill was passed without amendments in the National Assembly.

Minister of Local Government Anwar Husnoo claims that the bill is aimed at protecting citizens’ interests, safeguarding local democracy, and ensuring stability within councils.

However, Arvin Boolell, a Member of Parliament from the Labour Party, argues that the amendments give excessive power to the minister and infringe upon the freedom of conscience and choice of councillors.

He sees it as a sign of a declining regime making desperate amendments.

Khushal Lobine, a Member of Parliament from the Mauritian Social Democratic Party, highlights the winds of change in both urban and rural areas and raises concerns about the violation of candidate rights, the centralisation of power, and the timing of the amendments with upcoming elections.
