“Widespread Chaotic Situation” at the Port, Union Claims
The Maritime Transport & Port Employees Union (MTPEU) has raised concerns about a “widespread chaotic situation” at the Mauritius Ports Authority (MPA).
The union has accused the MPA of mismanagement, abuse of power, favouritism, and dysfunctional employee relations.
MTPEU members fear the potential privatisation of the organisation, questioning the Prime Minister’s statement about purchasing new tugboats.
They highlighted issues such as outdated equipment and the hiring of foreign workers instead of local mariners.
Strategic positions have allegedly remained vacant, and the union questioned the consideration of foreign candidates for top management positions.
The union also criticised the handling of a director’s suspension and the lack of communication regarding the investigation into the sinking of a tugboat.
