Non-Revenue Water (NRW): CWA’s water loss reaches 60% in 2020

The rate of water loss, also known as Non-Revenue Water (NRW), in the Central Water Authority’s (CWA) networks has increased from 51% in 2014 to 60% in 2020.

In other words, for every 10 litres of treated water, the CWA does not receive payment for 6 litres.

This was revealed by the Minister of Energy, Joe Lesjongard, in response to a question from Labour MP Ritish Ramful.

In 2014, about 229.6 million m³ of water were produced. However, the CWA was paid for only 111.7 million m³ of water.

In 2020, the amount of water produced was 319.5 million m³, but the CWA was paid for only 127.3 million m³ of water.

Minister Joe Lesjongard noted that with the assistance of the British government, experts have been engaged to conduct a detailed assessment of the NRW rate in the North and East zones of the country.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2024.

Lesjongard also reminded that a sum of Rs 900 million has been allocated to the CWA in the 2023/2024 budget, of which approximately Rs 825 million will be used to prioritise the replacement of faulty pipes.
