Mauritius records over 2 million tourist since reopening borders

During the two-year period of October 1, 2021 to September 30 of this year, Mauritius recorded 2,068,736 tourist arrivals.

The tourism industry, which is the island’s main driver of economic growth, was severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tourist arrivals in Mauritius recovered by 92.6% for the period January to September 2023.

Only after the reopening of borders two years ago did the tourism industry become the main engine of economic recovery, according to Tourism Minister Steven Obeegadoo.

In addition, the minister recently announced 19 new hotel projects with a total investment cost of Rs 21.3 billion.

These 19 projects will add 2,615 new rooms to the 13,000 existing rooms in the country.

The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority is implementing a market diversification strategy mainly in Asia, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.
