Mauritius on Track to Become the Sustainable Finance Gateway into Africa

Mauritius is steadily becoming a Sustainable Finance Gateway into Africa, according to the Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance, Mahen Kumar Seeruttun.

The announcement was made during the 15th Anniversary of Axis Fiduciary Ltd, where the Minister highlighted the measures being implemented to position Mauritius as an ideal jurisdiction for sustainable finance. 

The occasion also marked the listing of the first Green bond by the Stock Exchange of Mauritius.

Furthermore, the Bank of Mauritius and the Financial Services Commission recently published guides for the issue of sustainable bonds, emphasizing the country’s commitment to best international practices with reference to the International Capital Market Association’s Green Bond Principles. 

The Ministry is also developing an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework for ESG disclosures and risk management.

Seeruttun encouraged the public and private sectors to continue their coordinated efforts towards enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the economy. 

The Chief Executive of the Financial Services Commission, Dhanesswurnath Thakoor, emphasized the importance of the regulator and regulatees working together to promote compliance and regulations while ensuring a conducive market for investors.

The regulator/regulatee interactions were deemed a necessity in the compliance journey of any entity, with the aim of encouraging dialogue and exchange to advance the agenda of the Mauritius International Financial Centre.
