Since 2019, the State House, based on recommendations from the Commission of Prerogative of Mercy led by former Chief Justice Keshoe Parsad Matadeen, has granted a total of 2254 pardons.

The document presented to the National Assembly outlines cases benefiting from this clemency.

Out of 2511 individuals with legal issues, 557 applied for clemency in 2019, 478 in 2020, 638 in 2021, 591 in 2022, and 184 in 2023 up to date.

The offenses vary from cannabis possession to Rogue and Vagabond, theft, and violations of the Penal Code.

Le Mauricien reported on the distinction between pardon and sentence reduction, referring to the case of Chandra Prakashsing Dip, where a twelve-month prison term was commuted to a Rs 100,000 fine.
