Dry Season: Sugar Cane and Vegetables Threatened by Lack of Rainfall

Planters in Mauritius, particularly in the North and East, are facing concerns due to deficient rainfall during the dry season.

The inadequate water supply is reportedly affecting the growth of sugar cane and the cultivation of vegetables and fruits.

Planters emphasise the need for measures to ensure sufficient irrigation, suggesting facilities for efficient water extraction.

“The growth of sugar cane is already affected. The heat and lack of rain are severe,” said Salil Roy, president of the Planters’ Reform Association.

Faced with the ongoing water loss issue, “it would be advisable to take action now. We need to figure out how planters can get water for irrigating vegetables and sugar cane.”

According to him, many planters fear that vegetables will be affected. “We are closely monitoring the situation and hope that measures can be taken to address this crisis.”

The Central Water Authority maintains precautions to prevent water misuse and is preparing an action plan to address the situation.
