Eco-Sud, an environmental advocacy group, has slammed the appointment of Junichiro Ikeda, President of Mitsui Osl Line (MOL), as the honorary consul of Mauritius in Japan.

Ikeda’s company chartered the MV Wakashio, which caused a major oil spill.

Sébastien Sauvage, CEO of Eco-Sud was cited as saying: “This decision is bewildering, given that, to our understanding, Mauritius is currently in legal dispute with MOL as a stakeholder in the MV Wakashio oil spill. This appointment raises potential conflicts of interest and the implications it may have on ongoing legal proceedings.”

According to Le Mauricien, Eco-Sud has also sought assistance from the Japanese embassy in notifying responsible parties about a complaint they intend to file.

Despite MOL’s apologies and charitable efforts, questions persist about their commitment to addressing the spill’s consequences.
