Bamboo Biomass Project to Generate Electricity on 800 Acres

Entrepreneur Sen Carooppunnen is reportedly initiating a project to generate electricity using locally cultivated bamboo on an 800-acre plot in Rose-Belle.

This venture aims to reduce Mauritius’ reliance on fossil fuel imports and bolster local biomass sources.

The bamboo, developed in vitro, offers continuous, non-intermittent energy production, distinguishing it from wind and solar power. Sen Carooppunnen’s patented bamboo variety matches coal’s calorific value.

The project’s first phase, estimated at around 40 million euros, is expected to create 200-250 jobs.

Bamboo’s resilience and cost-effectiveness, coupled with its ability to absorb CO2, position it as a promising renewable energy source.
