Mauritian Textile Sector Eyes Global Expansion, Valued at Rs 22.9Bn

Mauritius is actively seeking to expand its textile industry’s global reach by engaging in trade negotiations with the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
This initiative was announced by Minister of Commerce, Sunil Bholah, during the 50th Textile Research Symposium.
The Minister emphasized the importance of exploring new markets in light of existing trade agreements with China, India, and the African Continental Free Trade Area, as well as the need to navigate a volatile international trade environment.
Additionally, Minister Bholah highlighted efforts to maintain favorable trade relations with the United States through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which is set to expire in 2025.
The Minister’s recent delegation to the U.S. received positive feedback, signaling a willingness to facilitate strong trade ties between Mauritius and the United States.
The Textile Research Symposium, organized in collaboration with the Textile Machinery Society of Japan, serves as a platform for promoting textile research and fostering connections among researchers and technologists.
Mauritius aims to leverage its textile and apparel sector, which employs over 21,700 individuals and constitutes 44% of the nation’s exports, by expanding into niche markets and supplying renowned brands such as Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and others.
