Marriage Meltdown and Divorce Surge: Mauritius Faces Relationship Crisis

According to the latest Population Census published by Statistics Mauritius, the number of marriages is declining in the country, while divorces are on the rise.

Between 2011 and 2022, the percentage of individuals aged 15 and above who got married and living with a partner decreased from 59.9% in 2011 to 54.9% in 2022.

Additionally, the number of people who have never been married has increased during the same period, with the rate rising from 27.6% to 31.5%.

Statistics Mauritius also highlighted that there were 48,800 cases of divorce or separation in 2022, representing a 6.9% increase compared to 2011.

Finally, in 2022, 59% of individuals in the age group of 25-44 were married, compared to 71% in 2011.
