Concerns over demolition of Asbestos-ridden Emmanuel Anquetil Building

The announcement of the demolition of the Emmanuel Anquetil Building to make way for a green space has sparked mixed reactions among traders in Port Louis.

While some support the creation of a green area in the capital city, others argue that the building should be preserved as a historic monument or repurposed into a museum.

The demolition proposal, originally suggested by trade unionists in 2012, has resurfaced in the 2023-2024 Budget speech.

Traders express concerns about the impact on surrounding businesses and question the feasibility of the demolition process, particularly due to the presence of the highly-toxic and carcinogenic asbestos in the building.

Asbestos exposure can also contribute to the development or exacerbation of respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and pleural plaques.

Traders in the area suggest careful planning and measures to minimise disruptions to the city centre.

The Emmanuel Anquetil Building currently houses various government offices, including the Civil Status Office, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Local Government.

The proposed controlled demolition would require local companies to ensure the safe removal of asbestos and gradual deconstruction.
