A fatal workplace accident occurred on Saturday, May 20, at a construction site near the Tribeca shopping center in Ébène, marking an unfortunate turn of events for 28-year-old Nivayen Kooroosamy.

The young worker reportedly became trapped between the blades of a concrete mixer’s silo, prompting authorities to swiftly respond to the distress call around 11 a.m. Firefighters from Quatre-Bornes and Coromandel arrived at the scene to address the harrowing incident.

According to reports, efforts to extricate the victim’s body, severed by the silo blades, proved to be a complex task. It reportedly took over three hours to free Nivayen Kooroosamy from the silo after isolating all electrical connections and securely immobilising the blades with robust ropes.

Soobash Lallbeeharry, Divisional Fire Officer of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS), stated, “Given the thickness and steel composition of the blades, it required time to cut through and remove the young man’s body. The assistance of the on-site employees was invaluable.”

Once the victim’s body was disengaged from the blades, medical personnel from the Emergency Medical Services (SAMU) could only confirm his demise. Subsequently, the remains were transported to Victoria Hospital in Candos. The post-mortem examination conducted by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, Chief Police Forensic Pathologist, determined that the cause of death was chest injuries.

An investigation has been launched, and the site supervisor will soon be interrogated by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in Rose-Hill. Authorities are actively seeking information about the concrete mixer operator’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Heartache Grips Family as Uncle Shares Concerns

According to Soodassen Kooroosamy, the victim’s uncle, Nivayen had been working in the construction industry for eight years. “During the concrete mixing process, a portion of cement remains in the silo, hardening after approximately an hour. It was at this point that Nivayen would intervene to break the hardened concrete within the silo, preventing any interference with future mixtures. However, as he was performing this task, the machine unexpectedly restarted. One of the blades caught him and inflicted a severe injury,” he recounted.
