Mauritius Catholic Church has called government for more transparency

Port Louis Vicar General Father Jean-Maurice Labour has claimed that politicians have used “ethnic conflicts” for their benefit.

In an interview with l’Express, Father Labour claimed the Catholic Church has been a historical partner of the State on issues of societal issues.

“PM Pravind Jugnauth is ill-advised. His advisors are protecting their own jobs and not passing on to him real information and think with him about solutions to build common good.”

The results, he added, is that Pravind Jugnauth is easily annoyed. “He is so praised by his advisors that whenever there is external criticism, this is interpreted as a war against him.”

“I am an ordinary citizen, I wonder why the investigation report on the sinking of the tug Sir Gaëtan was not published. I also wonder why the report on the assassination of Soopramanien Kistnen (MSM agent) was not made public.

“We are told the report was only given to the police. But if we really want to lead a country in transparency, we need to give replies. Pravind Jugnauth must understand that he cannot prevent questions.”

Last week, the head of the Catholic Church in Mauritius, Cardinal Maurice Piat, has hit at Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth over criticisms made against the judiciary and the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
