Trade Union demands interim compensation to face inflation

Leading trade union, the Mauritius Labour Congress (MLC), has called for the recall of the tripartite committee with a view to consider an interim compensation.

MLC President Haniff Peerun told Defi Media that the move has become timely due to soaring inflation rate.

“Even Commerce Minister Soodesh Callichurn has acknowledged that price hikes are affecting people’s purchasing power,” he said.

“The middle-class workers, pensioners and the downtrodden are the most affected by soaring inflation.”

Hence his call for the government to convene the tripartite committee with a view to granting an interim compensation to employees, many of whom reportedly earn the minimum wage.

The MLC has also asked the government to impose price controls.

“The Rs 500 and Rs 400 which were granted last January have already been swallowed up by galloping inflation,” he said.
