Cyclone warning class 1 in force in Mauritius

The Mauritius Meteorological Services have issued a Cyclone Warning Class 1 for Mauritius.

On Monday morning, tropical cyclone Batsirai was centred at about 750 km to the north-east of Mauritius, in latitude 16.0  degrees south and longitude 63.6 degrees east.

The estimated central pressure of the tropical cyclone is around 964 hPa and the estimated wind gust near the centre is  around 200 km/h.

Tropical cyclone Batsirai is moving in a west-north-west direction at a speed of about 18 km/h.

The Met Office said there are indications that the cyclone will recurve towards the south and start to move in a general west south west track as from tomorrow, Tuesday.

On this new trajectory cyclone Batsirai may represent a potential threat to Mauritius, the Met Office warned.

“The public in Mauritius  is advised to take preliminary precautions,” it said.

Today the weather will be partly cloudy with few passing showers mainly to the east, the south and the Central Plateau. The sky will become gradually cloudy with scattered showers as from tomorrow morning. A marked deterioration of the weather is expected tomorrow evening.   

Wind will blow from the southeast at a speed of about 35 km/h with gusts of the order of 65 km/h, strengthening as from tomorrow.  

The sea will be rough with swells of the order 3 metres. The public is advised not to venture at sea.
