Mauritius urges TikTok to contain and take action against abuse

TikTok users could soon be taken to task if discussions are successful between the Mauritian government and the Chinese video sharing application.

Deepak Balgobin, Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation, has been cited by Defi Media as having urged the regional office of TikTok to take quick action against those who post disputed content.

The minister reportedly pressed TikTok executives Farah Tukan and Justin Dowding – both based in Dubai – to urgently consider complaints registered through the Mauritian government’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-MU).

The meeting with TikTok executives comes after unsuccessful dealings with Facebook, which according to Minister Balgobin, takes time to respond.

“We register about 200 complaints a year about TikTok. Their officials have made it clear that they will prioritize where necessary and respond as quickly as possible,” Minister Balgobin was quoted as saying.

The announced he has invited Shou Zi Chew, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TikTok, to visit Mauritius.
