Supreme court’s website a “violation of separation of powers”

Users of the Supreme Court’s new website have claimed nothing has changed in the content. Instead, it’s now a “real headache” to register, because access is only possible through the Maupass digital platform.

Lawyers have also criticised an addition to the new system, which they believe is a violation of the “separation of powers” between the Executive (Government) and the Judiciary, Le Mauricien reported.

Lawyers claim that “too many personal details” are being asked for to access the website, which contains nothing in terms of confidential documents.

“The independence of the Supreme Court is likely to be at risk inasmuch as all activity on the server is under the active control of the Executive,” lawyers said in a letter to the Bar Council.

Maupass is used for the renewal of the declaration of vehicles, for a request for a certificate of morality, to access your birth certificate or to apply to the Public Service Commission, and this only requires a single username and password to connect to all these services.
