Six crew members of MV Wakashio to be repatriated

Six members of MV Wakashio, which wrecked off coast Mauritius in 2020, causing one of the most severe oil spills in the region, will be repatriated soon.

The Seafarers Association has reportedly made representations to this effect to the Ministry of Fisheries. The advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Police Commissioner on the proposed repatriation of the crew members was also sought.

On June 17, 2021, the DPP’s office informed the shipping manager that there were no objections to this matter. The Commissioner of Police also reportedly agreed.

Accordingt to Defi Media, the Ministry of Fisheries has just reiterated the request to Senior Puisne Judge Abdurafeek Hamuth, also the president of the MV Wakashio investigative court. He approved the repatriation request.
