A 35-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after being administered a counter-indicated antibiotic that triggered a violent allergic shock, despite multiple warnings provided to medical staff.

The patient, from Rivière-du-Rempart, suffered severe respiratory distress and physical swelling on the evening of 12 May, just two days after being admitted to a private facility for a planned caesarean section.

Her husband has since filed formal complaints with both the police and the clinic’s management, alleging a grave breach of safety protocols.

The Incident

According to the complainant, the life-threatening reaction occurred during visiting hours when a nurse administered an intravenous dose of Ceftriaxone. Within minutes, the patient experienced:

  • Acute breathing difficulties and a sensation of choking.
  • Widespread skin rashes across her face, arms, and torso.
  • Significant swelling of the eyelids.

An emergency medical team intervened quickly to stabilise her breathing. While her condition is now described as stable, she remains under observation with lingering skin redness and body aches.

Documented Warnings

The family maintains that the medical staff were fully aware of the risks. Upon admission at 6:00 pm on 10 May, the husband reportedly informed staff of his wife’s allergy to Ceftriaxone, a cephalosporin antibiotic.

Evidence suggests the allergy was well-documented prior to the error:

  • The information was entered into her medical file.
  • A doctor noted the allergy on a pre-admission form.
  • The patient was wearing an identification wristband specifically highlighting the allergy.

Internal Investigation

The incident has overshadowed what was initially a successful medical procedure.

The patient had given birth to a healthy baby boy on 11 May, and her post-operative recovery was proceeding without complication until the injection was administered the following evening.

The clinic is expected to conduct an internal review of the incident following the formal grievance.

Police investigations are also ongoing to determine how the antibiotic was administered despite the multiple red flags present in the patient’s records.
