657 Motorists Busted for Drunk Driving in Just 3 Months

Since the beginning of the year, a total of 657 individuals have been disqualified from driving by the court for having a blood alcohol level exceeding the prescribed limit.

This is a stark contrast to last year’s figure, where 1,807 people were disqualified for the same offense.

In addition to alcohol-related offenses, the police have recorded 892 cases of driving under the influence of drugs.

In 2023, there were 657 convictions for driving under the influence of drugs and 1,817 convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Notably, 219 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs just in the first two months of this year.

The legal limit for alcohol in blood is currently set at 20 milligrams per milliliter, 27 milligrams per liter in urine, and 9 micrograms per milliliter in breath.

Under the Road Traffic Act, offenders can face penalties ranging from a fine of not less than Rs 20,000 to not more than Rs 50,000, imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years, and revocation of their driving license for a minimum period of 12 months for their first conviction.

For subsequent convictions, the penalties are more severe: a fine of not less than Rs 50,000 and not more than Rs 75,000, imprisonment for a minimum period of 12 months and a maximum period of eight years, and revocation of their driving license for a minimum period of 24 months.
