Bangladesh's Envoy Zokey Ahad Hails Mauritius as Africa's Trade Gateway

In a ceremonial event at the State House, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Mauritius, Zokey Ahad, presented his credentials to President Prithvirajsing Roopun G C S K on Monday, June 10. The ceremony was marked by warm words of appreciation and mutual admiration between the two leaders.

President Roopun welcomed Ahad and congratulated him on his new role, extending his best wishes to the President of Bangladesh.

In his address, his Excellency highlighted the significance of the strong bilateral relations between Mauritius and Bangladesh and encouraged Bangladesh to leverage the trade facilities offered by COMESA, SADC, and EAC through Mauritius as a gateway to Africa.

The Mauritian President also praised the contributions of Bangladeshi workers in the country’s textile sector and emphasized the importance of signing pending Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Agreements between the two nations.

He fondly recalled his visit to Bangladesh in May 2023, where he had witnessed firsthand the country’s progress and development.

High Commissioner Ahad conveyed warm greetings from the President of Bangladesh and expressed gratitude for the cordial cooperation extended by the Government of Mauritius.

He assured that efforts would be made to strengthen bilateral relations and highlighted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s initiatives to improve the quality of life in Bangladesh, as envisioned by its founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Ahad also acknowledged Bangladesh’s recent achievements on the international stage under Prime Minister Hasina’s leadership and appreciated Mauritius for employing Bangladeshi workers. Both leaders expressed hope for exploring new avenues of cooperation for mutual benefit.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the State House and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of Mauritius, as well as Zakaria Bin Amjad, Md. Jahangir Alam, and Md. Asaduzzaman from the Bangladesh Mission.

High Commissioner Ahad joined the Bangladesh Mission in Port Louis on June 9, 2024. A career diplomat from the 17th batch of the BCS (Foreign Affairs) Cadre, Ahad has served in various capacities in Bangladesh Missions in Beijing, The Hague, Manchester, Kolkata, and Kunming since joining the service in 1998.

The two leaders expressed confidence that their countries would continue to work together to strengthen their partnership and achieve mutual benefits.
