The government of Mauritius has unveiled its budget for 2024-2025, including a range of measures aimed at improving the lives of citizens. Here are the ten key measures outlined in the budget:

1. Guaranteed Minimum Income

The guaranteed minimum income has been increased from Rs 18,500 to Rs 20,000, providing a much-needed boost to the financial stability of low-income families.

2. CSG Income Allowance

The CSG Income Allowance has been increased, providing additional financial support to individuals who rely on this allowance.

3. School Allowance

From July 2024, children aged 3 to 10 years will receive an allowance of Rs 2,000 per month. This initiative aims to support the education and well-being of young children.

4. Reduced Price of Gas Cylinders

The price of gas cylinders for household use has been reduced by Rs 240 to Rs 190. This move is expected to bring relief to households that rely on gas for cooking and other purposes.

5. Increased Pensions

Pensions will be increased from Rs 14,000 to Rs 14,000 from July 2024 and to Rs 15,000 from January 2025. This move is expected to improve the financial security of retirees.

6. Free Internet for Young People

The government has introduced a free internet package for young people aged 18 to 25 years. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and provide young people with access to online resources.

7. Equality Allowance

A new allowance of Rs 2,000 per month has been introduced for households with an income of less than Rs 20,000 per month. This initiative aims to promote equality and reduce poverty.

8. Extended Maternity and Paternity Leave

The government has extended maternity leave from 14 weeks to 16 weeks, and paternity leave from one week to four weeks. Additionally, a new maternity allowance of Rs 2,000 per month has been introduced for nine months.

9. Hygiene Products for Girls

The government has announced the distribution of hygiene products, such as sanitary pads, to girls from grade 6 to grade 13. This initiative aims to promote menstrual hygiene and reduce the risk of health problems associated with poor hygiene.

10. Subsidy on Examination Fees

The government has introduced a complete subsidy on examination fees for “repeaters” who are taking the SC and HSC exams. This initiative aims to support students who are struggling financially and provide them with an opportunity to pursue their education.

Overall, the budget included a range of measures aimed at improving the financial stability, education, and well-being of citizens.
