Sergeant Ram’s team from the CID in Beau-Bassin, under the supervision of SP Gerard, arrested 21-year-old Jean-Christophe Bergue on Wednesday, March 13.

The suspect, known to the police, is suspected of breaking into the secondary residence of the Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Naveena Ramyad in Beau-Bassin.

It was the minister’s father who discovered the theft and reported it to the police yesterday.

The investigators quickly apprehended the suspect thanks to SafeCity camera footage, finding him in the Barkly Residence area.

On Tuesday, the minister’s father went to his daughter’s home to air out the house and realized that the front door had been forced open.

He discovered that various items, including a refrigerator, three LCD TVs, a bed and mattress, six sofas, an ironing table, four wooden tables, a dresser, a washing machine, a microwave, two metal doors, six faucets, various electrical accessories and cables, eight surveillance cameras and DVRs, two gas cylinders, and a mini-fridge, totalling Rs 950,000, had been stolen.

He immediately contacted the police, and several units responded to the scene. The minister’s father stated that the theft occurred between February 26 and March 11.

This is not the first time Jean-Christophe Bergue has been in trouble. In 2022, he evaded the police for a month after being arrested for theft by the Camp-Levieux police and assaulting an officer.

Claiming he felt unwell and needed to go to the hospital, he was taken to Victoria Hospital in Candos, where he was admitted but managed to escape the officer’s watch.

He was later caught walking at the Immigration Place in Port-Louis.
