Public Hospitals grapple with chronic staff shortage

The Dr A. G. Jeetoo and Victoria Hospitals are allegedly grappling with a chronic shortage of staff, particularly during night shifts, as well as faulty equipment.

Nurses and other staff members are increasingly expressing despair over the situation, which they claim has persisted for an extended period.

They argue that understaffing leads to absenteeism and exacerbates existing problems.

The shortage of personnel, particularly nurses, has been an ongoing issue due to irregular recruitment and service diversification. According to Le Mauricien, some staff members, discouraged by the lack of proactive measures, are said to be nearing their breaking point.

They have called for better staff deployment and insist on the importance of attracting young professionals to the field with competitive salaries and favourable working conditions.

Despite reports of defective equipment, the Ministry of Health maintains however that staff members should direct their complaints to the medical director for appropriate action.
