Shocking Report Exposes Over 1,000 Living as Slaves in Mauritius!

A report by the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ) has revealed that over 1,000 people are living as modern-day slaves in Mauritius, with women and children being the primary victims of human trafficking.

The country apparently serves as a transit point for victims from East Africa and Madagascar.

The report has highlighted the prevalence of child prostitution, with girls as young as ten involved.

Despite the adoption of a new Child Protection Act in 2020, the country reportedly lacks sufficient data and resources to effectively combat this issue, and the absence of a dedicated organisation for coordinating efforts against child exploitation is a major concern.

The ECLJ has recommended establishing an agency to tackle trafficking and providing comprehensive training and resources.

The report also presented harrowing stories of individuals, illustrating the urgent need for Mauritius to address this grave human rights issue.
