In a real-life chase straight out of an action movie, the tranquility of Rivière-des-Galets, a village in the south of the island, was shattered when a bus and a minibus were stolen from the National Transport Company (CNT) garage.

The daring escapade unfolded in dramatic fashion, prompting a thrilling pursuit involving the police and specialised units.

On Friday night, two individuals infiltrated the CNT depot in Souillac. Seizing the opportunity, one suspect commandeered a bus while his accomplice fled in a minibus conveniently left with the keys inside. The security guard swiftly alerted authorities upon hearing the engines roar to life.

With an operation codenamed “Iron-Rod” in place, the police, along with the Emergency Response Service (ERS) and the Divisional Support Unit (DSU), initiated a relentless chase.

From Rivière-des-Galets to Solferino, the pursuit zigzagged through the streets, taking law enforcement officers on a hair-raising journey.

The driver of the stolen bus remained defiant, evading the police’s attempts to stop him. The pursuit continued, crossing multiple towns, until the suspect was eventually cornered near a residential area in Solferino.

Police reinforcements, sirens wailing and lights flashing, joined the pursuit, culminating in the arrest of the driver.

Meanwhile, the stolen minibus met a different fate. The vehicle was discovered later, damaged near a bridge in Rivière-des-Galets. The hunt for the second suspect is now underway.
