Sir Bhinod Bacha dies 6 hours after being hit by a car

Sir Bhinod Bacha, a distinguished figure in the civil service, passed away after spending six hours in intensive care.

The Senior Advisor at the Prime Minister’s Office was admitted to the hospital on Saturday, June 17, following an accident in the parking lot of his residence in Quatre-Bornes. He was struck by a vehicle while walking with his driver to reach his own car.

Following Sir Bhinod Bacha’s demise around 7 p.m. on Saturday, the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident was charged with a provisional charges of involuntary manslaughter.

The driver was subjected to a breathalyzer test, which yielded negative results. In the presence of his lawyer, he provided an initial statement to the Criminal Investigation Division in Quatre-Bornes and participated in a reconstruction of the events before being released on bail.

However, he is expected to be re-interrogated. Preliminary indications suggest that the vehicle was preparing to exit the parking area on the upper level of the shopping centre when it hit Sir Bhinod Bacha.

Sir Bhinod Bacha sustained severe injuries, prompting an immediate alert to emergency services. The former Chief of the Civil Service and advisor to the Prime Minister was transported to Victoria Hospital in Candos.

Due to the gravity of his injuries, doctors proceeded with emergency surgery. Following the operation, Sir Bhinod Bacha was transferred to the intensive care unit, where he passed away early in the evening.

As the former Chief of the Civil Service, Sir Bhinod Bacha worked with several Prime Ministers, including Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (1969 to 1982), Sir Anerood Jugnauth (1983 to 1994), Dr Navin Ramgoolam (2009-2014), and Pravind Jugnauth (2017-2023), thus becoming deeply entrenched in the corridors of power.

In the 1990s, a mysterious fire at his residence resulted in the death of his first wife. Sir Bhinod was accused of the murder but was eventually declared not guilty.

His body is being displayed at the Moura Funeral Home in Petite-Rivière until 12:30 p.m. on Monday, June 19.
