Mauritius exports increase by 17.2% to hit Rs 50.1 billion

Over the period January to December 2022, the Exports Oriented Enterprises (EOE) exports stood at around Rs 50.01 billion as compared to Rs 42.65 billion during the corresponding period in 2021, thus representing an increase of around 17.2 %.

During the period January to December 2022, South Africa maintained its leading position (17%) in our market share, followed by UK (12%), France (12%) and USA (10%). During the same period, EOE exports to main destinations, namely South Africa, UK, USA and France have increased by 12.5%, 12.6%, 17.4% and 19.7%, respectively.

There is reportedly a surge in exports of trousers, T-shirts and shirts for the South African market.

The Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah said the enhanced export competitiveness was due to the positive impact of support schemes such as the Freight Rebate Scheme (from 2014 to 31 January 2023, the amount disbursed stood at Rs 118.6 million to 95 beneficiaries); and the Support for Trade Promotion and Marketing Scheme (from 2016 to 31 January 2023.

The amount disbursed stood at Rs 1.03 billion to 107 manufacturing companies and 447 agro-businesses) also featured among the reasons for this performance, he said.
