“No black sheep will be tolerated, either in the police force or in the public service in general”. The strong statement came from Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth on Wednesday the “passing out parade” of the 875 new recruits of the Mauritius Police Force at the Gymkhana in Vacoas.
“Those who are tempted by easy money will have to pay the price,” he said.
He added that it is a sad fact that, from time to time, police officers are arrested for their involvement in various crimes and drug-related cases.
“This tarnishes the reputation of the police force and compromises the good work done by the majority of our police officers.”
New Equipment
Jugnauth also announced that, despite the difficult economic situation, the government has disbursed Rs10.9 billion to ensure that the police are adequately equipped: By December 2023, new police stations will be built in Vallée-des-Prêtres, Vallée-Pitot, l’Escalier and Phoenix and 12 light armoured personal carriers will be acquired.
A Mauritius Disciplined Forces Academy will also be built at Cote d’Or and the coastal surveillance radar system for monitoring the maritime zone will be replaced.
In addition, in order to further intensify the fight against drug trafficking and other crimes, the Prime Minister announced the acquisition of 72 vehicles for the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit, the Central Investigation Division, and Divisional Crimes Intelligent Units.
Other special equipment including high patrol vessels will soon be added to existing police assets, he said.
