Public, private sector talk about Ukraine War and implications for Mauritius

Defi Media reported that a working group led by Senior Economic Adviser Sen Narrainen is working on defining the socio- economic impacts of the war in Ukraine.

According to the newspaper, talks have been focussing on international sanctions imposed against Russia with regard to financial transactions such as SWIFT, Visa and Mastercard.

The newspaper said procedures relating to the granting of the Premium Visa could also be revised in order to attract more investors and foreign direct investments in Mauritius.

The discussions come at a time when the United States has warned China against coming to Russia’s aid in Ukraine, saying there will be “consequences” if Beijing provides support to Moscow’s war effort.

Al Jazeera cited US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan made Washington’s concerns “clear” to the director of China’s Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission Yang Jiechi during a meeting in Rome.

The working group reportedly includes: the Office of the Prime Minister, various ministries (tourism; foreign affairs; regional integration and international trade; energy and public services; industrial development, SMEs and cooperatives; financial services and good governance; agro-industry and food security ; trade and consumer protection), as well as representatives of the Office of the Attorney General, the Bank of Mauritius, the Financial Services Commission, the Financial Intelligence Unit, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, the Economic Development Board, Statistics Mauritius, State Trading Corporation, Mauritius Investment Corporation, Business Mauritius, Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chamber of Agriculture, Mauritius Export Association and Mauritius Bankers’ Association .
