An American scientist has ended up being detained at the Brown Sequard Mental Hospital, after a failed attempt to flee from the hotel where he was quarantined.

The 50-year-old scientist landed in Mauritius on October 9 and was redirected to a hotel-turned-quarantine centre on the eastern coast where he was scheduled to stay until October 23.

However, five days later, he was spotted by medical personnel sneaking out of the hotel together with his luggage. Residents of a COVID-19 quarantine centre are not allowed to step out of their rooms.

Le Mauricien newspaper reported that several medical and security personnel managed to get back hold of him not far off.

The man was reportedly informed that he had violated the Quarantine Act and taken to the mental hospital, instead of back to his hotel. The reason behind the transfer is not known.

Evading a quarantine facility entails heavy fines and up to a five-year prison sentence.
