University Reschedules May 28 Exams to Accommodate its Many Muslim Students

The University of Mauritius (UoM) has postponed all examinations scheduled for this coming Thursday, 28 May, after it emerged they clashed with the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Adha.

The decision follows an intervention by Shakeel Mohamed, the third-ranking minister in the Mauritian government, who raised the scheduling conflict with the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr Kavi Kumar Khedo.

Dr Khedo agreed to reschedule the affected papers, which were set to be taken on Thursday, 28 May 2026, by students in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. The clash would have prevented many Muslim students from sitting their exams.

In addition to postponing Thursday’s tests, Dr Khedo has committed to a permanent policy change, assuring the minister that the university will no longer hold examinations on days of religious observance.

Minister Mohamed announced the resolution on Facebook, where he also called upon all other educational institutions across Mauritius to adopt the same principle moving forward.
