School Closes after Suspected Virus Outbreak Affects Numbers of Young Pupils

A state primary school in Mare d’Albert has been temporarily closed and its upcoming sports day postponed following a suspected outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease among pupils.

The emergency health measures were noted by the Cabinet during its meeting on Friday, 22 May, triggering a swift public health response from the Ministry of Education and Human Resources.

In a public communique issued on Friday, the Ministry announced the exceptional closure of the school on health grounds.

A sports day, which was scheduled to take place on the local Mare D’Albert football pitch, has also been officially postponed.

Healthcare protocols have been immediately activated. The Ministry of Education has alerted the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and the Rose Belle Health Centre to the situation.

Furthermore, arrangements have been made alongside the Ministry of Health and Wellness to deploy healthcare professionals directly to the homes of the affected families.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a highly contagious viral infection that predominantly affects infants and young children.

It typically presents with symptoms including a fever, mouth ulcers, and skin rashes on the hands, feet, and occasionally other areas of the body.

While the infection is generally mild and resolves on its own within a few days, health authorities emphasize that rigorous hand hygiene and the isolation of infected individuals are strictly recommended to limit further transmission.
