Mauritius Faces 60km/h Wind Gusts as Cold Anticyclone Moves In

High winds of up to 60 km/h and dangerous three-metre swells are set to hit Mauritius as a relatively cold anticyclone moves across the region.

The meteorological station issued a bulletin this Saturday morning, 23 May, warning that an anticyclone moving to the south-west of the Mascarenes is driving moderate, chilly trade winds directly into the area.

The south-easterly winds will blow at speeds of 20 to 30 km/h, with localized gusts peaking at 60 km/h.

Maritime authorities have strongly advised against any ventures into the open ocean, as well as the western and southern lagoons, due to rough sea conditions and three-metre south-westerly swells beyond the reefs.

While the island will enjoy fair, clear weather throughout this morning and afternoon, a shift is expected after dark.

Light rain is forecast to develop overnight, primarily affecting the south, the east, and central high ground, though skies will remain clear across the rest of the island.

The arriving weather system will also bring a distinct chill to the island’s temperatures:

  • High grounds / Central plateau: Temperatures will peak between 22°C and 24°C during the day, dropping to overnight lows of 17°C to 19°C.
  • Coastal regions / Littoral: Daytime highs will reach between 26°C and 28°C, before dipping to minimum temperatures of 21°C to 23°C tonight.
