Rose-Hill District Faces Crisis as 80% of 105 Active Chikungunya Cases Identified
Health authorities have sounded the alarm as the town of Rose-Hill emerges as the primary hotspot for a Chikungunya outbreak, currently accounting for up to 80% of all active cases on the island.
Of the 105 active cases presently recorded across Mauritius, between 70% and 80% are concentrated within Rose-Hill and its immediate neighbouring localities.
The scale of the local cluster has prompted an emergency summit scheduled for this Wednesday, 8 April, between Ministry of Health officials and the Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill Council to address the escalating crisis.
Urgent Field Intervention
Dr Fazil Khodabocus, Acting Director of Health Services, confirmed that authorities are planning a targeted field operation.
The objective is to identify existing gaps in the current response and bolster preventative measures to curb further transmission.
“A field visit will be considered to identify flaws and strengthen preventive actions,” Dr Khodabocus stated regarding the upcoming strategy.
Annual Toll Reaches Nearly 1,000
While the current active caseload remains at 105, the broader impact of the virus this year has been significant.
Since the start of 2024, Mauritius has recorded a total of 977 cases of Chikungunya.
Local government and health leaders are expected to use Wednesday, 8 April, meeting to synchronise efforts between municipal cleaning teams and medical surveillance units to prevent the Rose-Hill cluster from spreading further across the district.
