Italian Cruise Giant Costa Croisières Eyes Major Return to Mauritius

The Mauritian tourism industry is poised for a significant boost as the Italian cruise titan, Costa Croisières, signals its intention to resume operations on the island following a seven-year hiatus.

The potential return was announced by Tourism Minister Richard Duval following high-level talks with Costa Croisières executive Daniel Caprile.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ITB Berlin international travel trade show, currently underway in the German capital.

Reclaiming a Vital Economic Pillar

Prior to suspending its regional operations in 2019, Costa Croisières was a cornerstone of the local maritime sector, funneling up to 15,000 cruise passengers annually into Mauritius.

Minister Duval described the potential comeback as a “major step forward,” highlighting the significant “shortfall” the economy has endured during the company’s absence.

The Minister emphasised that the return of these large-scale vessels would provide a vital lifeline to a broad chain of local businesses, including:

  • Taxi drivers and excursion operators
  • Artisans and small shopkeepers
  • Restaurateurs and port workers

“Imagine the loss of earnings over all these years,” Duval remarked, noting the direct impact the cruise industry has on the grassroots economy.

A Signal of Stability

The discussions were attended by Dinesh Burrenchobay, Chairman of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), alongside local representatives of the cruise line.

Minister Duval interpreted the talks as a clear, positive signal that the company intends to reintegrate Mauritius into its global itineraries.

Amidst rising global geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, the Minister used the platform in Berlin to reassure international investors and operators.

He insisted that Mauritius remains a “safe and stable” destination. “Our island represents stability at several levels,” he affirmed.

Future Connectivity

The push for cruise tourism forms part of a broader strategy to revitalise the sector.

Beyond the maritime industry, Minister Duval is scheduled to hold further discussions in the coming days aimed at strengthening air connectivity and securing additional international partnerships.

If negotiations with Costa Croisières reach a successful conclusion, the move is expected to inject fresh momentum into the Mauritian tourism recovery, benefiting the entire local economic value chain.
