437 Fined as Police Launch Major Road Safety Crackdown Ahead of New Year

Mauritius police have issued fines to 437 motorists in a single 24-hour window as authorities intensify “Operation Coup de Poing” across the island’s road network.

The massive enforcement drive comes as the nation enters the final days of 2025. Police Headquarters has confirmed a “zero tolerance” policy is now in effect to ensure New Year celebrations do not turn into tragedies.

The 24-Hour Blitz

During the latest day of targeted checks, officers recorded a high volume of serious traffic violations:

  • 437 total motorists sanctioned for breaches of the Road Traffic Act.
  • 8 drivers caught operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
  • 3 drivers tested positive for illicit drugs.
  • 27 cases of excessive speeding.

Escalating Enforcement

Despite repeated warnings and public safety advice from the authorities, officials noted that negligence remains a persistent issue. Alcohol and drug consumption behind the wheel continue to be detected with concerning regularity.

In response, Central Barracks has announced that operations will be scaled up nationwide. Targeted breathalyser tests and drug screenings are now being conducted on a daily basis.

A Plea for Safety

As Mauritians increase their nighttime outings to bid farewell to 2025, the police mission remains focused on preventative safety.

The objective, according to official statements, is to ensure that the festive period remains memorable for the right reasons rather than being marked by road fatalities.

“The police are formal: there is zero tolerance on the roads.”
