Mauritius Weather Office Warns Against Sea Excursions as 50km/h Gusts Loom

Members of the public are being strongly advised against venturing out to sea following warnings of heavy swells and sudden gusts of up to 50 km/h, according to the latest national weather forecast issued this Saturday morning, 16 May.

The meteorological station has strictly discouraged any excursions into the open ocean, as well as within the western and southern lagoons.

Conditions beyond the coral reefs are expected to be particularly rough, driven by incoming south-westerly swells reaching heights of approximately 3 meters.

Chilly Temperatures and Persistent Drizzle

The unsettled conditions are being caused by a moderate and slightly disrupted airstream currently moving across the region.

While the island started Saturday morning with partly cloudy skies, minimal improvement is expected as the day progresses.

The weather office noted that the high grounds will likely experience light, scattered showers throughout the afternoon.

Temperature-wise, daytime highs are forecast to peak between 24°C and 26°C across the central plateau, while coastal areas will enjoy slightly warmer conditions ranging from 28°C to 30°C.

Overnight Fog and Rain Expected

The adverse weather is set to persist into the evening, with atmospheric conditions deteriorating after dark.

Forecasters predict cloudy periods accompanied by intermittent rainfall, which will primarily impact the eastern and southern sectors of the island, alongside the central plateau.

Drivers are also urged to exercise caution due to expected pockets of thick fog developing over elevated terrain overnight.

As night falls, temperatures are projected to drop to lows of between 18°C and 20°C on the central plateau, while the coastal strip will see a minimum oscillation between 22°C and 24°C.

A steady breeze will continue to blow from the east-south-east at an average speed of 25 km/h.
