The group ‘Pa tous nou Sim Card’ has announced that they will hold a protest march against the re-registration of SIM cards next Saturday in Port Louis.

The announcement was made by Lyndee Lutchmiah, a member of the group, during a press conference this Saturday.

She states that the objective of this march is to protest against the re-registration of SIM cards, which is seen as a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights and privacy.

Percy Yip Tong, another member of the group, emphasized that this march is a citizen-led and non-political initiative.

He questions the effectiveness of re-registering SIM cards in combating drug trafficking, instead highlighting the need to target the use of phones in prisons.

James Brocker, another member, explained that letters have been sent to Mauritius Telecom and Emtel to express their concerns and request the halt of the SIM card re-registration process.

He insists that the population should not be passive and reminds that there are two cases in court challenging the re-registration exercise.
