Pension Hike to Rs 13,500, More Money or Mirage?
The recent increase in old-age pension to Rs 13,500 is a “money illusion,” according to Xavier-Luc Duval.
The leader of the opposition expressed this view during a press conference of the PTr/MMM/PMSD alliance on Saturday, March 16.
All three parties are in agreement. Although the electoral promise made by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth in October 2019 is now a reality, it has “no value.”
Due to the high cost of living, the Rs 13,500 old-age pension will not be enough to meet the needs of the elderly, explained XLD.
Navin Ramgoolam, on the other hand, took the opportunity to point out that over the past five years, pensioners have not received any compensation.
“What is Rs 13,500 giving you? It no longer has value, (…) it’s worth Rs 10,500,” said the PTr leader, noting that some people are being deceived.
The prices of medication, electricity, and fruits have risen, leading to a decrease in purchasing power, said the former Prime Minister.
“This offer is like giving an egg but taking a cow in return.” warned Navin Ramgoolam.
Speaking in turn, Paul Bérenger also emphasized that the increase in pension to Rs 13,500 is only an illusion.
