On one side, the Prime Minister has advocated for patriotism and made announcements, including an increase in old-age pensions.

On the other hand, opposition leaders have highlighted societal issues such as emigration. Two observers analyze these speeches.

Two speeches. One optimistic and the other pessimistic. In his message to the nation for National Day, Pravind Jugnauth mentioned patriotism and announced the increase in old-age pensions, among other things.

The leader of the red party, Navin Ramgoolam, on the other hand, stated that “everything is in ruins.” The leader of the opposition, Xavier-Luc Duval, addressed emigration, which he finds concerning.

According to observer Dharam Gokhool, it was clear that the Prime Minister would boast about his achievements in terms of accomplishments.

The Prime Minister also explained that the government is assisting the population economically. “These two points are essential for relieving the population.

But the Prime Minister seems to be avoiding other issues that the population is facing. I read his message in a school.

He talked about the sense of patriotism and the adoption of digital skills. These themes are usually addressed when everything is going well and there is no need to worry, when everything is under control,” explains the observer.

However, for Dharam Gokhool, an analysis of the situation in the country reveals that there are problems that need to be solved.

“For example, it is true that economically, the government is making efforts, but Navin Ramgoolam mentioned debt, the lack of development of new economic pillars, and the young people leaving the country. The necessary skills that the country needs to support its development are lacking,” notes the observer.

He emphasizes that there is a problem plaguing society: drugs. “The opposition is focusing on societal dysfunctions and challenges, such as prices doubling and sometimes tripling for consumers.”

Dharam Gokhool continues that the speeches are contrasting. “On one side, the Prime Minister’s track record shows that everything is fine, which instills confidence.

On the other hand, there are fundamental problems like nepotism in promotions, which creates frustration.

Seniority criteria must be taken into account, but skills cannot be avoided. Within the police force, for example, older officers are favored over younger ones.”

However, Dharam Gokhool believes it is too early to say anything. According to him, the proposals put forward during an electoral campaign will ultimately be decisive.

For his part, observer Yvan Martial describes it as a tragicomedy. “In this tragicomedy, everyone plays a role. Pravind Jugnauth sees the good side of things while Navin Ramgoolam sees the bad side.

Every Mauritian must ask themselves important questions: Is the country heading in the right direction? Are we happier, more fulfilled?” Yvan Martial indicates these are personal questions that each Mauritian must answer.
