Mauritius Battles Dengue Epidemic: Death Toll Rises to 10

With over 3,000 confirmed cases of dengue fever reported in Mauritius for the first time, the country is facing an unparalleled public health crisis. The actual number of cases is suspected to be higher than reported, given that 50% to 90% of cases are asymptomatic.

As of March 12, 2024, the most heavily impacted regions include Port Louis and surrounding areas, along with various locations in the northern part of the island. Additionally, cases have emerged in Flacq, Beau-Bassin, and parts of Plaines Wilhems.

Tragically, the death toll attributed to dengue has risen to 10, following the passing of an elderly man in the northern region. While six other deaths have been recorded among individuals who tested positive for the disease, it is officially stated that underlying health conditions may have contributed to their demise, as stated by the Ministry of Health.

Despite the somber circumstances, health authorities say there are signs of progress in the battle against Dengue.

Speaking to Defi Media, Dr. Kursheed Meethoo-Badulla, Non-Communicable Disease Coordinator at the Ministry of Health, reported that the positivity rate has decreased from 27% in 100 daily tests to just 6% in 500-600 tests, while hospitalisations have also seen a drop from 70-80 cases per day to less than 55-60 cases daily over the past ten days.

Additionally, field teams are said to have observed a decrease in mosquito and larvae populations, though continuous monitoring will be required to ensure this trend persists.

Dr. Meethoo-Badulla attributed the spread of cases in these regions to population mobility.

Stringent intervention measures, including fumigation, larviciding, and prompt testing in health facilities, are being enforced to facilitate early detection and treatment of infected individuals.

Furthermore, extensive awareness campaigns are being conducted in schools and workplaces to educate the public on dengue prevention measures.
